Before You Borrow — Know Your Options
Borrowing is not always the right choice for everyone. For one thing, it costs money, and there might be other options that are better suited to your individual situation.
WARNING: Do you really need a loan today? It can be expensive to borrow small amounts of money and borrowing may not solve your money problems. Check your options at: moneysmart.gov.au
Here are three alternatives:
- Apply for a Centrelink advance payment. Eligible recipients can request an advance on their future Centrelink payments from Services Australia at no cost.
- The No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) offers free loans up to $2,000 for eligible low-income Australians. NILS requires you to submit your quote with your application, and if approved, they pay it directly to the supplier/vendor. NILS loans cannot be used for cash, bills, debts or rent.
- Free financial counselling — You can access the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 to discuss your debt problems and solutions. You can also visit the government’s MoneySmart website for budgeting guidance
If you are experiencing financial hardship, Sure Cash Finance has a hardship policy. If you require hardship assistance, contact our team to discuss your situation.
How We Assess Centrelink Applications
At Sure Cash Finance, our team assesses each loan application as a holistic (looking at the overall picture rather than just a part of it) process. Whether you are seeking a JobSeeker, disability pension, age pension, single parent or carer payment loan, we look at the following factors:
- What is your total Centrelink payment amount?
- Do you have any additional income, such as part-time work or rental income?
- What are your regular living expenses?
- What are your existing debt commitments?
- We also look at each individual applicant’s overall ability to repay without hardship.
Sure Cash Finance can also align repayment schedules with each applicant’s Centrelink payment cycle, whether weekly or fortnightly.
As an Australian Credit Licence holder (ACL 390591), Sure Cash Finance assesses every application under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act.
Loan amounts and Terms
Sure Cash Finance offers two types of loans for people on Centrelink:
- Cash Loans — also known as Small Amount Credit Contract (SACC) loans. These short-term loans range from $300 to $2,000. The repayment terms can vary from 16 days to 12 months.
- Personal Loans — also known as Medium Amount Credit Contract (Mrms up to 12 months.
Your repayments can be scheduled weekly or fortnightly to align with Centrelink payment schedules. There are no early repayment fees for our cash and personal loans.
You can open our online loan calculator and enter the amount you’d like to borrow and the amount of time you’d prefer to pay the loan off. The calculator will then show your repayment schedule and the total amount payable before you apply for the loan.
What Does It Cost?
Your Cash Loan (Small Amount Credit Contract) fees consist of an establishment fee of up to 20% of the loan amount plus a monthly fee of up to 4% of the loan amount.
Here is a loan example:
For a $1,000 loan over 6 months, the establishment fee would be up to $200 and the monthly fee up to $40 per month — a total maximum cost of $440 over the life of the loan.
Your Personal Loan (Medium Amount Credit Contract — from $2,001 to $5,000) fees consist of a $400 establishment fee, which is flat regardless of the loan amount, plus 48% per annum interest.
For a $2,500 personal loan over 10 months, the comparison rate is 85.17% p.a.
WARNING: This comparison rate is true only for the examples given and may not include all fees and charges. Different terms, fees or other loan amounts might result in a different comparison rate.
There are no hidden fees for either loan type and no early repayment penalties.
How to Apply

- Tell us about the purpose of your loan. For example, is it for bills, an emergency expense, household goods, car repairs, medical expenses or some other expense?
- As part of the application, provide your personal details and proof of identity.
- Once your application is submitted, the Sure Cash team will assess it against responsible lending guidelines and contact you with the outcome.
If approved and your contract is signed, funds are transferred to your account. While our team will act promptly, please bear in mind that your financial institution’s processing times may vary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Centrelink payments qualify for a Sure Cash Finance loan?
While all applications are individually assessed, and approval is not guaranteed, we consider applications for personal loans from the following Centrelink recipients:
Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Single Parent Payment, JobSeeker Payment, Carer Payment, Veterans Affairs Pension, and Parenting Payment.
Do I need to tell Centrelink about a personal loan?
You do not have to tell Centrelink about a new personal loan because borrowed money is not considered to be assessable income or a financial asset. However, you might have to inform Centrelink if the loan money is used to change your financial situation. If you leave the loan amount as a lump sum sitting in your bank account, it can count towards your total asset limit. You would need to report this if you exceed the threshold. Similarly, if you use the loan money to purchase a vehicle, property, other asset, or an investment that generates income, you must notify Centrelink.
What is a Centrelink advance payment and how do I apply for one?
A Centrelink advance payment is available for eligible recipients. If approved, you will receive a portion of your future Centrelink payments as a lump sum upfront. Centrelink will deduct money from your next 13 payments until the debt is repaid.
You would not be eligible for this advance if you:
- are still repaying one you got more than 12 months ago
- owe a debt to the Australian Government
- can’t afford to repay it within 6 months
- have less than the lowest advance amount available
- are currently outside Australia
